Ice Pavilion opens Saturday!

I read the opening date for the outdoor ice rink a few weeks ago and thought it was impossible that the ice rink would be opening so soon since at the time I read it we still hadn't taken the winter coats out of the closet! It's true, though, the Longmont outdoor ice rink opens tomorrow, Saturday November 15th for the 2008-2009 season! Here are the details:

When: It's open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday
Where: Longmont Ice Pavilion at Roosevelt Park, 725 Eighth Ave.
Cost: FREE (but only on Saturday)
More information: Call 303-774-4777 or visit www.ci.longmont.co.us/rec/icerink/index.htm

It's not too late to register for skating lessons or hockey! We're definitely looking forward to some family time out on the ice!

Ice skating!!!!!

Did you see this story in yesterday's paper about the Roosevelt Park ice rink reopening this year? I actually think it's a poor budget decision for the city and not a great move for the new council members but I can't wait for it to reopen! Looks like we'll be ice skating by Christmas! :)

Ice Skating

[Edited 1/12/08 - I see a lot of you end up on this page through Google searches so I thought I'd point out that I posted updated information about Longmont's ice rink here. Happy skating!]

One of our favorite winter activities was cut during the City of Longmont's recent budget cuts - the Roosevelt Park Ice Pavilion! Boo hoo! So, since we no longer have access to ice skating here in Longmont I thought I'd post some info on other rinks in the area (borrowed from last year's listing in the Yellow Scene):

WinterSkate
Many of us have to stretch our belts during the holidays, and Winterskate is no exception. They’ve pushed the walls back for a bigger surface than the old 100'x55' rink. They still offer FREE carriage rides on weekend nights and also show holiday movies on a large projection screen. Heat lamps keep the Pavilion’s tables toasty. Concession stands ply caffeine, sugar and the occasional carbohydrate. Rink opens Nov. 18 and stays frozen through February, weather permitting. Skate until 10 p.m. Thurs-Sat, 8 p.m. during the rest of the week. Steinbaugh Pavilion, 824 Front St., Louisville, 303.449.3137, http://www.bouldercreekevents.com/.

One Boulder Plaza Ice Rink
It’s small and sometimes crowded, but open until 10 p.m. Fri-Sat, 7 p.m. Sun-Thurs. Season runs Nov. 17 – Feb. 19. 1301 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.209.3722, http://www.oneboulderplaza.com/.

Boulder Valley Ice
BVI is Boulder County’s only full-size (200'x85') NHL rink. It has public skating and drop-in hockey. No “season” here, these hockey die-hards skate year-round, hosting almost a half-million rink rats annually. Call or check the web for times. 125 Superior Way, Superior, 303.494.4777, http://www.bvice.com/.

Boulder Valley YMCA
Members skate free, but drop-in rates ($5 youth, $8 adult) are pretty reasonable for non-members as well. Check the Y's website for a full schedule of hockey, lessons and skate times, but don't worry, the 7:40- 8:45 p.m. Tuesday night pick-up broomball session still makes the cut. 2800 Dagny Way, Lafayette, 303.664.5455, http://www.ymcabv.org/.

CU Boulder Rec Center Ice Rink
If you are student, know a student, or can bribe the student working the desk, this rink is for you. Located just west of Folsom Field, Boulder, 303.492.7467.

Ice Centre at the Promenade
When the going gets tough, the tough might get going, but they stop paying to name ice rinks. It’s not the Sun Center anymore, but the ice is still cold. Three NHL-worthy sheets, public skating and drop-in hockey sessions. Call or check the web for times. 10710 Westminster Blvd., Westminster, 303.469.2100, http://www.icecentre.com/.

Broomfield Event Center
Rather watch pros lace it up? Catch the newly-minted Rocky Mountain Rage CHL hockey team. The puck drops on their home opener Nov. 10 against the Tulsa Oilers, with another thirty-odd home games following through March. 11450 Broomfield Lane, Broomfield, 303.460.8800, http://www.broomfieldeventcenter.com/.

By the way, that Yellow Scene link mentioned above (http://www.theyellowscene.com/Editorials.asp?feature=Winter+Sports+Guide) also lists area sledding hills, ski resorts, and cross country ski destinations if you're interested! :)
