There is certainly no shortage of opportunities for fun this summer! Now the hard part - finding camps that your kids are interested in, are age appropriate, that you can afford, that work with your schedules and that don't require you to drive them all over the place! :) Happy hunting!

Longmont Summer Camps

Now that Spring Break is coming to a close it's time to really focus on finding activities for your kids over the summer. To help, there is a pullout section in tomorrow's Times Call all about summer camps! There are options for all ages, of course, like the Longmont Rec Center, YMCA, Sunflower Farms, Bits Bytes and Bots, Longmont Museum, Airborne Gymnastics, and Longmont Humane Society. Some of the ads even have coupons for camp discounts. If you don't get the paper delivered be sure to pick one up tomorrow!

Sunflower Farms schedule June through November

SproutHouse Program 2009/2010
Monday through Friday Sunflower Farm has a drop-off program for 2-5 year olds.

Having your child come to the farm regularly, whether you choose one day of the week, three days or all five, allows them to get to know the seasons of the farm and animals better. This agricultural-based program is as much outdoor time as possible. It is a hands-on, experiential class which encourages children to access a deeper place within themselves. Kids will learn the value of being part of a team, problem solving and an ability to access their own creativity. While exploring nature, children are encouraged to lead, and at the same time cultivate trust, respect and the idea that we are greater together than we are individually.

Even on cold days we will bundle up, climb in the wagon and tour the farm, feed animals, build snowmen, collect eggs, climb the giant treehouse, catch toads, follow bugs, or play together at the SproutHouse. Outdoor activities as well as indoor activities such as art, music, games and stories are all part of this program.

More info on the Silver Creek Soccer Summer Camp

The coach emailed me a pdf and I can't figure out how to upload it here (anyone? :) ) so I'll just give you the important info:

The camp is designed for children ages 3 to 6 who are just learning to play soccer. Coaches Merv Johnson and Harry Corvese along with soccer players from area high schools will work with your kids on passing, trapping, and shooting all in a fun atmosphere with lots of feedback for the kids. Merv Johnson is the head coach for the Silver Creek Lady Raptors' soccer team and Harry Corvese is the assistant coach. The camp will be held on Wednesdays (July 9, 16, 23, 30, August 6 and 13) from 5:30 to 6:30 at Silver Creek High School which is at 4901 Nelson Road. The cost is $60 per child and thereis a 10% discount for siblings. Kids need shin guards, soccer shoes, water, sunscreen and insect repellant. Soccer Summer Camp

This was on the BoulderLongmontMoms Yahoo Group today:

"A friend of mine's husband is the girls soccer coach for Silver Creek High School. A group of the girls from the team, along with the coaches, are putting on summer soccer camps at the high school. They are doing one for kids ages 3-6 on Wed evenings from 5:30- 6:30. The camp runs July 9 - Aug 13 and costs $60. They are for all levels of players. They also are running camps for elementary, middle and high school age kids. I signed my son up, and told them I would pass the info along. For more info, just email mervj66@yahoo.com and they can send you registration info."

No...wait...already?!

TWO DAYS of school left?? That's it? Where did the last 9 months go? I'd love to hear what fun, exciting, local plans you have for your kids this summer. Will you spend lazy afternoons at the pool, frolic in the park, keep up on that summer reading at the library, or send the kids off to a summer camp? By the way, I've really been struggling with "advertising" on this site. Several people have emailed asking for me to post about them (with and without offers of trying their services first) and I don't know what to do! On the one hand, I frequently post about events that I have never attended before and know I'm not going to attend but posting about a public event feels different than posting basically an endorsement of a local business. Know what I mean? I'd love to hear your feedback. Would you like to know about these small, usually mom-owned businesses here in Longmont? Any suggestions on criteria I should use to decide which businesses to post about? What do YOU want when you come here?

Edited to add: Yes, I have that silly Google ad banner in the right hand column but I think I've made a whopping $1.43 off it (and they don't mail you a check until you reach $100 - haha!) so I'm not exactly doing this for the money or looking to get free stuff for myself (for you, yes! Always on the lookout for that!) :) Just wanted to clarify...

Tree Climbing - Dances with Branches (ages 7 and up)

Tree Climbing Colorado offers introductory recreational tree climbing lessons using fun, easy-to-learn, arborist rope techniques, stressing both safety for climbers and protection of trees. All minors must have parent/guardian present. Longmont area park location given after registration.

Fee: $26.00 youth & teen, $29.00 adult

Furniture Painting Summer Camp

The Painted Poppy is offering two summer camps this year - June 3rd through 6th from 1 pm to 4 pm and July 8th through 11th from 1 pm to 4 pm. Kids will paint their own piece of furniture! Materials and furniture are provided. If you're interested, hurry to register because there are only 10 spots available in each session. Cost is $185 per session and you can register by calling them at 303-485-8270.

Music themed summer camps

Summer Camps with a music theme seem to be in demand this year. The Times Call wrote an article about them (http://www.timescall.com/entertainment/entertainment-story.asp?ID=7536) and it includes a list of more than 10 nearby music camps including Guitars Etc and Mojo's Music Academy right here in Longmont. If your child loves music this would be a fun way to spend some time this summer!

Longmont Athletic Club Summer Camps

The City of Longmont will host their annual Summer Activities Fair Sunday April 20th from 11am to 4pm at the Longmont Recreation Center (310 Quail Road). There will be representatives from several organizations there to answer questions and provide information on their camps. Be prepared to sign up too - registration forms will be available!

Participating Organizations include Longmont Recreation Center, Colorado Youth Programs, Blue Mountain Ranch, Longmont United Youth Soccer, Fiske Planetarium, Fire Mountain Kids, Longmont Humane Society, Highlands Presbyterian Camp, and Sun Pony Ranch

Also, Longmont Free University published their listing of 2008 Summer Camps. It's the most exhaustive list I've seen for Longmont and nearby towns! There are all kinds of camps listed - tennis, dance, woodworking, horsemanship, astronomy, photography, hockey, golf, anime, yoga, writing, jewelry, computers, drama, math, writing, art, spanish and much much more!

Archery in the Wild

Looking for a summer sport camp that's not the usual soccer or baseball? How about archery? Archery in the Wild is a Longmont business that sells archery supplies and also provides lessons and hosts leagues and tournaments. They'll be offering summer camps too! Airborne Gym's summer camps!

Some of the highlights include:
-camps and classes for kids ages 1 (and walking) through teens
-Junior Olympian (ages 4-6) and Olympian (age 7+) camps featuring 2000 Olympian Tasha Schwikert
-NCAA Gymnastics Camp (ages 7+)
-Angelina Ballerina Camps (ages 2 1/2-4)
-Princess Camps (ages 4-6)
-Half-day combo camps which include a little of everything - gymnastics, dance, rock climbing, crafts, games, outdoor play, etc (ages 4-12)
-plus all their regular gymnastics, dance and climbing classes!

The summer session runs June 2nd through August 16th. Current Airborne Gym members can register starting today and new students can register beginning April 10th!

Their summer pricing format makes it so easy to attend anywhere from 4 to 11 weeks of classes. Obviously the more you attend the cheaper it is per class, but it's so nice to be able to schedule vacations and not worry about missing (and paying for) that week of class. It's so much less commitment than their school year schedule! Our 4 year old attended last summer and can't wait to go back this year!

New business - Math Monkey

There's a new business opening on Ken Pratt - it's called Math Monkey and it seems to be a math specific tutoring service for kids ages 5 through 14. They are open during the day for homeschooled and 1/2 day kindergarten students and later in the day for kids to visit after school. Check out their website at http://www.mathmonkey.com/longmont.

They're having a grand opening on April 12th and they'll have games, food, fingerprinting for your children, raffles and of course information about their programs! They'll also be offering summer camps according to Kids Pages magazine but I can't seem to find any details on their website. I'll let you know when I find out more!

Longmont Humane Society Summer Camp

Join the Longmont Humane Society for their Kids and Critters Summer Day Camp! They offer a morning session for 7 and 8 year olds ($175/week) and an afternoon session for 9 to 12 year olds ($190/week). There are 10 weekly sessions available and you can sign up beginning March 4th. If your child is really into animals this would be a great way to spend some time this summer!! Summer Camp Guides

I've found two great resources for statewide summer camp listings: The Colorado Summer Camp Guide and this Denver Post article. The Colorado Summer Camp Guide lets you search for keywords or by type of camp and that led me to some fun listings for summer camps in Longmont including Summer Horsemanship camp at Cornerstone Farms and a Youth Theatre program at the Longmont Theatre Company. The Denver Post article has some Longmont camps listed as well including Avid4 Adventure Day Camp and Bits, Bytes and Bots Computer Adventures. Not all of the sites have their summer camp info updated for this year but it doesn't hurt to start researching early so you can be sure to meet the registration deadlines!

You could also check out the 2007 Daily Camera Summer Camp Guide to get ideas for camps in Boulder County. Hopefully they'll be publishing their list for 2008 soon!

Crackpots has posted the registration form for their summer camps on their website. Here is the info:

Princess and Pirate Camp
Age: best for kids 6 and up (completed kindergarten)
Cost: $90 (+tax on materials) per 5 day session
Dates: 6/9 - 6/13 from 9 to 10:30 or 7/14 - 7/18 from 9 to 10:30
Kids will paint a bank, box, plate, plaque and figurine.

Do the Dishes Camp
Age: best for kids 6 and up (completed kindergarten)
Cost: $90 (+tax on materials) per 5 day session
Dates: 7/7 - 7/11 from 9 to 10:30 or 7/28 - 8/1 from 9 to 10:30
Kids will paint a dinner plate, salad plate, soup/cereal bowl, mug and ice cream bowl.

Animal Kingdom Camp
Age: best for kids 6 and up (completed kindergarten)
Cost: $90 (+tax on materials) per 5 day session
Dates: 6/16 - 6/20 from 9 to 10:30 or 8/11 - 8/15 from 9 to 10:30
Kids will paint animal figures as well as a box, plate and message board with an animal motif.

Multimedia Art Camp
Age: best for kids 7 and up (mainly because of the glass work)
Cost: $110 (+tax on materials) per 5 day session
Dates: 6/23 - 6/27 from 9 to 10:30, 7/21 - 7/25 from 9 to 10:30 or 8/4 - 8/8 from 9 to 10:30
Kids will experiment with a different medium each day - clay, mosaics, painting, glass fusing and more!

Sunflower Farms Summer Camp Info

Sunflower Farms has published its summer camp schedule on its website! Here's the info:

Time: 9:30 to 1:00; three consecutive days.
$125 total for three days.
Age: 3-10 yr.

Each summer camp session begins promptly at 9:30 and ends at 1:00. (Wed, Thurs and Friday; June 4 - Aug 15). Camps are designed to inspire curiosity and creativity and give children a sense of rural lifestyle. Sign up for several sessions—these camp mornings are never the same. Wildly Creative! Each morning we break into groups based on ages: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. and 9-10 Wednesdays and Thursdays provide a loosely structured general overview of the farm which includes activities such as animals, art, work with nature, gardening, old fashioned play, and water fun. On Fridays we allow plenty of ample time for kids to concentrate on special areas of interest, such as horses, treehouse fun, group games, etc. Five to one ratio guarantees each child is accounted for every second! Swimsuits (for sprinkler play) under clothes please. Sunscreen must be applied by parent. Please pack a sack lunch.
